Find out the requirements for the medical program you plan on entering. Most schools will require a bachelor's degree plus volunteer work.
Go to university and complete a four-year bachelor degree. This degree is usually in a scientific field like biology. Check with your future medical school to see what degrees are acceptable. Finish the degree with top grades.
Go to your chosen medical school. These programs usually last four years, but a few Canadian institutions offer three-year programs that run through the summer. You can also study in joint programs at this time or start to specialize in your area of expertise.
Start your residency. This will occur after graduating from the program. You will be matched with a residency program that will allow you to specialize in your chosen area. The residency can last two years for family practice and four to six years for other specialties.
Work in the field. You are now a doctor. You will need to continue your education throughout your career to keep up-to-date in your field.
