Earn a three or four-year undergraduate degree with a high GPA. A major in a scientific subject is typical, with coursework in physics, chemistry and biology. Most medical schools have a specific set of prerequisite coursework needed for admission, so it is important to consult the particular program you are interested in attending and organize your studies accordingly. Since admission into medical school is very competitive, consider participating in volunteer work and extracurricular activities to distinguish yourself from other applicants.
Apply to and attend medical school. Many Canadian medical schools require applicants to write the Medical Admission Test (MCAT) administered by the Association of American Medical Colleges. Additional requirements often include personal statements of interest, interviews and reference letters. It is important to consult the particular medical school you are interested in attending to verify current admission requirements. There are 17 medical programs consisting of 3-5 years of basic medical training at many universities across the country, with four in Quebec.
Complete post-graduate specialty training. Five years of approved residency training is required in order to specialize in neurology. The make-up of these five years is dependent on whether one wants to specialize in adult neurology or pediatric neurology. The former requires one year of basic clinical training followed by a minimum of one year of residency training in internal medicine and at least three years of residency training in neurology. The latter consists of one year of basic clinical training followed by a minimum of one year of residency training in pediatrics followed by at least three years of training in neurology.
Write the specialty certification exam. Applicants must first request an assessment of training, after which they are given notification of their eligibility to sit the certification exam. Directed by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, the examination in neurology is held once a year and consists of a written component and a practical component.
