Apply to study at a Canadian college or university. There are a few extra steps to the admissions process that international students needs to go through, compared to Canadian students. Most universities have specific information on their websites on how international students should apply. You won't be able to apply for a study permit until you've been accepted by a school.
If you need a study permit, gather the following documentation:
Proof of identification
The letter of acceptance from your university
Information on how long your program of study takes to complete
Evidence you have adequate funds to live off of (tuition plus $10,000 per year)
Proof of medical clearance.
A piece of government-issued photo ID is usually enough proof of your identity. Proof of funding is usually provided through bank statements, student loan documentation or official letters stating that your parents or guardians will be financially supporting you while you study.
Apply for a study permit from Citizenship and Immigration Canada, if necessary. They will require copies of all the documents listed above. Getting a study permit can be a fairly long process, so you should apply for your permit before you arrive in Canada. You can expect to wait at least two or three months for your study permit after applying.
Your criminal record may be checked and you must also convince the immigration officer you speak with that you will leave Canada once your studies are completed. You may also be asked to provide additional documentation, such as medical and birth records. Students under 18 may be required to designate a resident of Canada as their custodian while they are in the country. Fluency in English or French, Canada's official languages, are a definite asset on your application.
