How to Study Abroad for Free

Studying abroad seems out of reach for many undergraduate and graduate students because of the high costs commonly associated with traveling and living out of the country for any prolonged period of time. However, there are scholarships and grants for students that are interested in studying abroad for almost all majors and study programs. Studying abroad is a unique experience, one that can greatly improve your college experience. Don’t let financial limitations keep you from studying abroad.

      Use the search function on the Study Abroad website to find a study abroad program that works for you. Study Abroad is a a free online resource that allows students to find scholarships and ways to pay for study abroad programs, while providing pertinent information about the actual process of study in another country. You can search by country or region where you would like to study, by academic subject or by program type. Study Abroad also provides links to major resources for study abroad scholarship programs like AIFS Scholarships, which awards scholarships for students to study abroad over the summer or for a semester, and Fulbright Scholarships, which are often awarded to students looking to teach or seek an advanced degree abroad.

      Visit the Vistawide World Languages and Cultures website if you are interested in studying abroad to learn another language related to your major or studies. Vistawide regularly updates their list of scholarships and grants for students studying a foreign language. The Vistawide website is grouped by language, so it’s easy to search for potential scholarships and grants for students looking to study a particular language like French, German or Chinese.

      Talk to someone at your school’s study abroad office. If your college doesn't have a study abroad office, somebody in the financial aid or international affairs office may be able to help you. Most colleges and universities offer a variety of study abroad programs for their students, ranging from a semester to full year for some programs. Going through your college can make the process easier because they already know your academic history, program enrollment and financial situation, which can help your adviser find a study abroad grant or scholarship program particularly beneficial for you. You’ll also be assured credit toward your degree since it’s a school-sponsored or school-approved program.

IES Abroad is an organization founded in 1950 that helps provide study abroad opportunities for students all over the world. The IES Abroad website also offers information about need-based scholarships, merit-based scholarships, diversity scholarships and legacy scholarships, which are granted to qualified students whose parents studied abroad through IES Abroad. The IES Abroad website also offers valuable information about application deadlines, travel safety and internship programs abroad.
