How to Study Painting in Italy

Many of the world's greatest artists hailed from Italy, including Michelangelo, Ghirlandaio and Botticelli. If painting is your passion, then studying abroad will help you hone your craft. Several schools and programs throughout Italy offer painting classes, from summer intensive programs to semester-long college courses. Whether you want to study painting in Florence, Rome, Milan or Tuscania, you can find a program that meets your specific needs.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide the amount of time and money you want to devote to your painting course. Choose between short painting holidays, intensive summer programs and full-semester college courses. Go over your finances and resources for paying for the study, and evaluate your ability to afford each type of program.

    • 2

Research programs at a variety of schools in Italy. Websites such as Italian Legacy, Study Abroad International and Italian Language Florence offer course listings and information on different programs (see Resources). Make a list of your top choices. Write down the pros and cons for each program. Consider the styles of painting offered by each choice, and the skill level of the instructors.

    • 3

Apply to the schools. Fill out all required forms by the due dates. Designate the particular painting courses you wish to take. Arrange for any additional funding you will need for your studies. Many painting courses are taught in English. Begin studying Italian if your courses will be taught in the language, or if you want at least a basic speaking ability for your time abroad.

    • 4

Apply for a student visa. Contact the Italian Embassy or Consulate in your jurisdiction to determine which documents you will need to present when you apply, suggests Study Abroad International. Not all Italian Consulates issue visas, but those that do not will be able to redirect you to the closest embassy that does. Additional documentation, including a passport, letter of acceptance from the school, proof of means of support and insurance coverage, may be required for your study abroad.

Book your travel as soon as you know the dates of your program. Search several websites to find the best price and itinerary for your tickets. Arrange for transportation from the airport to your housing accommodations. If the painting program you select does not include or offer housing, research local hostels, apartments and host family options for the particular town. Contact the school and ask for recommendations of places to stay.
