What Are the Top Medical Schools in North Carolina?

North Carolina's strategic plan includes continued growth in medicine, medical and bio-technologies. Home to four medical schools, including University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill--ranked second according to U.S. News & World Report's annual ranking of primary care--and Duke University Medical School, ranked sixth in the nation for medical research programs, North Carolina values doctors and medicine.

The Global Health Institute, Comprehensive Cancer Center, Heart Center and Integrative Medicine unit and more contribute to the knowledge needed to manage global public health concerns and diseases responsible for the largest number of annual U.S. deaths. The Center for the Study of Aging tracks a large pool of individuals in the challenge to understand and manage the aging process as large numbers of Americans enter old age. Regarded as one of the world's top medical schools, about 4 percent of 2009's applicant pool were admitted.

The school's community-centered vision is best demonstrated by its clinics, including student-run Greenville Community Shelter Clinic and student- and faculty-managed James D. Bernstein Community Health Center. The Bernstein Center serves low-income area residents.
