Genaseo, New York Colleges

Located in upstate New York's Finger Lakes region, the village of Geneseo is home to one college, the State University of New York College at Geneseo. SUNY-Geneseo first admitted students in 1871 when it was known as Wadsworth Normal and Training School and became an official State University of New York campus in 1948. The next closest colleges to Geneseo are Genesee Community College and Elim Bible Institute.

    • In US News & World Report's 2010 Best Colleges ranked SUNY-Geneseo 12th among the North region's master's universities and second among public colleges in that category. SUNY-Geneseo has 42 undergraduate degree programs. The college offers several cooperative programs that offer accelerated undergraduate and graduate degrees. SUNY-Geneseo has many majors that also have adolescent certification available. SUNY-Geneseo students can also participate in three pre-professional programs: pre-law, pre-medicine, and pre-veterinary medicine.

      SUNY-Geneseo reports it has 4,950 full-time undergraduate students, and 88 full-time graduate students. The college has 265 full-time faculty members, of whom 91% have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree. This makes for a 19/1 student/faculty ratio, and 92% of classes are taught by full-time faculty. The median class size is 26 students.

    Genesee Community College

    • Genesee Community College has also been part of the State University of New York system since its founding in 1966. Its main campus is in Batavia, about 23 miles northwest of Geneseo. GCC also has six other campus centers including Lima and Dansville, which are even closer to Geneseo. GCC offers over 50 associate and certificate programs, covering an array of disciplines. GCC reports having approximately 4,000 students.

    Elim Bible Institute

    • Elim Bible Institute was founded in 1924 and has been located in Lima since 1951. Elim does not grant degrees, but students are able to transfer most of their credits to Christian colleges, some public colleges and private universities. Elim does grant three year diplomas to train students for ministry.
