St. John's College, a four-year college established in 1869 and located at St. John's Hospital in Springfield, is sponsored by the Hospital Sisters of St. Francis. St. John's College is the oldest U.S. Catholic hospital-based nursing school.
The coursework within the school of nursing at St. John's is designed for upper-level students who have already completed general education courses at accredited colleges. The curriculum includes courses in pathophysiology, pharmacology, psychiatric nursing and critical care, as well as health care leadership and management. Nursing students are trained in all areas of patient care from neonatal to geriatric care through hands-on classroom instruction and clinicals at St. John's Hospital.

The Springfield branch of Robert Morris University offers a comprehensive program through its school of nursing and health studies. The university offers bachelor's degrees in applied health sciences and health and fitness management. Students can also earn associate degrees in nursing, medical assisting, fitness and exercise, surgical technology and pharmacy technology.
The nursing curriculum exposes students to the fundamentals of pediatrics, mental health care, critical care, pharmacology and adult and maternal care. Students within the program, offered with an accelerated option, study microbiology, developmental psychology, anatomy and physiology in addition to participating in internships and clinical studies at local hospitals, such as Northwestern Memorial Hospital. The curriculum prepares Illinois nursing students for state regulation exams and careers as registered professional nurses.

Lincoln Land Community College is a two-year college in Springfield that provides local students with a comprehensive nursing education and offers associate degree and certificate programs. Students enrolled in the nursing program can choose from an associate degree in nursing, an associate of applied science in nursing and nurse assistant and practical nurse certificate programs.
Lincoln Land College's occupational nursing program offers courses in anatomy and physiology, human development, applied nursing techniques and procedures and microbiology. The nursing program is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission and prepares students for careers as nurse assistants, licensed practical nurses and certified practical nurses.
