Carnegie Mellon University is the top-rated art college in Pennsylvania. According to the most recent "U.S. News & World Report" rankings for art schools (2008), CMU ranked No. 7 among all American art colleges. Carnegie Mellon is well known in art and academic circles for offering innovative interdisciplinary programs. The bachelor of fine arts degree program at CMU is divided into four areas: fine arts, computer science and art, humanities and the arts and science and the arts. These programs are broadly defined and allow students leeway in pursuing interdisciplinary studies. At No. 14 in the nation, Temple University's Tyler School of Art is the state's second-highest-rated art college. The art school began in the 1930s as part of an estate donation to the university. Since then it has evolved into one of the nation's best art programs. Temple offers several art or art-related degree programs including bachelor's and master's degrees in fine arts along with several other degrees: bachelor of art, bachelor of science, master of arts, master of architecture, master of education and the Ph.D. The school offers studies in several art disciplines: ceramics, art history, architecture, printmaking, sculpture, art education, photography, fibers, painting and drawing, foundations in art, metals and jewelry, glass and graphic design.

The University of the Arts College of Art and Design in Philadelphia is the state's third-highest-rated art college, ranking No. 37 on the 2008 "U.S. News & World Report" list. The school offers an extensive array of degree programs including 11 bachelor's and eight master's degrees in various areas of specialization. The B.F.A. is offered in crafts, photography, film/digital video, film/animation, painting/drawing, graphic design, printmaking, sculpture, illustration and animation.
