Martial Art Colleges

The Martial Arts involve the study of battle and the art of fighting. Combative movements are used in a method of defense, with the intention of defeating your opponent. Students of the martial arts can choose from a number of disciplines, including Karate, Tae Kwon Do, and Judo, along with others. The practice has existed for centuries. For new or existing students, there are higher education offerings available as well.
  1. Tony Higo's National Martial Arts College

    • Students in England may study at the National Martial Arts College, which is located in the northern area of the country. The school was started 45 years ago and offers Tae Kwon Do, Kickboxing, Karate, and Ju Jitsu. A number of courses are available for children as young as three years of age, women, and families. A potential student may opt for a free class prior to embarking on a program. The school also offers a number of location options for those wishing to take part but unable to reach the main center. Students may attend class in Otley, Halifax, York, Sheffield, as well as many other places.

    Indiana University

    • Indiana University's School of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation provides courses and coaching through the school's Kinesiology department. Undergraduate students interested in pursuing a course of study may obtain a certificate in Martial Arts. The program involves 23 credits, and involves classes in fitness and management, as well as allowing students to choose from either karate, T'ai Chi Ch'uan, and Hapkido. The program also requires that students become black belts in one of the arts. Electives include research and lab options in Kinesiology as well.

    University of Bridgeport

    • The University of Bridgeport, is an 83-year-old institution in southwestern Connecticut.The university houses the International College, with courses meant to provide a world view. One of the choices is the bachelor of arts degree in Martial Arts Studies, which is noted as being the first of its kind in the United States. Students pursuing this option will study the history and ideas behind martial arts, pursue a particular martial art, and examine the influence of martial arts as a whole. Required courses include Buddhism, Martial Arts School Development, and Martial Arts and East Asian Thought. Martial Arts tracks include Karate, Taiji, and Tae Kwon Do. There are also internship and thesis components.
