Art Colleges in Memphis

Memphis is famous for Tennessee barbecue and blues music, but the city has much more to offer, including a flourishing art community. According to a 2003 study by ArtsMemphis, the city's performance and visual arts industry accounted for more than $100 million in revenue that year and supported more than 3,000 full-time jobs. For those interested in pursuing a career in visual arts, Memphis has several colleges and degree programs from which to choose.
  1. Memphis College of Art

    • Founded in 1936, this college is one of just four independent southern art schools to be regionally and nationally accredited. Its accreditations come from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. Students can study everything from painting and sculpture to digital media and graphic design. The college confers both bachelor's and master's degrees in Fine Art, as well as Master of Art Education degrees.

    University of Memphis, College of Communication and Fine Art

    • Along with its journalism and communications offerings, this university's College of Communication and Fine Art embraces both visual and performance arts, with programs of study in architecture and art, as well as theater and dance. It has its own art museum, along with the Institute of Egyptian Art and Archeology and the Jones Hall Gallery. The college hosts a number of public arts programs, from art exhibitions to concerts and theater and dance performances.

    Christian Brothers University, School of Arts

    • According to its website, this Catholic university is routinely acknowledged as "one of the best universities in the South." The university's School of Arts features a Department of Visual and Performing Arts and confers Bachelor's of Fine Arts degrees as well as art minors. Students can choose from concentrations in art education, art therapy, studio art or graphic design. There are opportunities for exhibition both on campus and in the city.

    Rhodes College

    • Rhodes College offers an undergraduate degree program in art, balancing studio time with courses in art history. Courses are taught by nationally recognized faculty. The college features a professional campus art gallery and offers its students opportunities for internships with museums and galleries, as well as nonprofit arts organizations. Students even may garner one-on-one internships with artists or architects. Rhodes also features a strong record of graduate program placement.
