In the southern part of the state near Philadelphia is the University of Pennsylvania, where students can earn undergraduate and graduate degrees in communication, education, law, engineering, nursing and veterinary medicine, among others. At Drexel University, which was established in 1919, students can study science, technology and various sciences. Students at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts study the arts in its historical buildings, museums and updated studios.
In the western part of the state, students can study at the University of Pittsburgh to earn an undergraduate degree in areas of arts and sciences, business, education, engineering and law, and they also have a choice between about 200 graduate degrees. Students can earn undergraduate and graduate degrees from Chatham University in such programs as business, arts, sciences, environmental studies and religion, among others. At the Art Institute of Pittsburgh -- part of the international Art Institutes -- students learn about design, media arts, fashion and culinary arts.
In central Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania State University -- or Penn State, as many call it --- offers undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as specialist medical and legal programs, continuing education and distance learning in 17 colleges. Other campuses are spread around the state. In Summerdale near Harrisburg, Central Pennsylvania College offers bachelor's degrees in science, associate degrees in science and applied sciences and certificates in areas of business. Harrisburg Area Community College offers associate degrees and certificates in 21 areas, including arts, sciences, education, engineering and industrial technology.
In northern Pennsylvania's mountain and forested region, the University of Scranton offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in areas of arts and sciences as well as in colleges of management and professional studies; continuing education and online programs also are available. Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre is made up of six colleges, including Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences; Graduate and Professional Studies; Science and Engineering; Sidhu School of Business and Leadership; Nesbitt College of Pharmacy and Nursing; and the School of Education. Lock Haven University has programs in accounting, various sciences, technology, arts, education and international studies.
