Job Description for Paraprofessional Education

A paraprofessional in the field of education has a number of job responsibilities that support the classroom teacher and reinforce student learning. Some of these responsibilities include providing direct instruction, supporting students individually and in groups, and preparing lesson plans for teacher review. They also collaborate with the teacher to plan and prepare teaching aids, coordinate instructional efforts, and develop and grade tests, homework, and projects.
  1. Instruction

    • An educational paraprofessional exhibits academically appropriate knowledge and strengths in the art and science of teaching and learning. They are familiar with, and know how to use, a variety of teaching strategies to help students learn. They understand how students learn and are able to individualize teaching strategies to meet different learning styles. They have an understanding of normal academic developmental milestones and are able to recognize when a student is performing above or below expectations. They have broad overall knowledge of the curriculum content areas for the educational level in which they work. They have knowledge about dealing with difficult behaviors and know how to support positive behavior in the classroom.

    Organization

    • An educational paraprofessional is responsible for many routine and time-sensitive activities that affect the quality of teaching, the atmosphere of the classroom, and the quality of the learning that occurs in the classroom. Being able to manage time effectively is critical. In addition to managing time effectively, an educational paraprofessional is responsible for the organization of the classroom environment and instructional artifacts, such as individual student records, anecdotal records, portfolios, etc.

    Personal

    • An educational paraprofessional exhibits a number of personal skills that support the teacher and students. They are competent in reading, math, spelling, and writing. They understand the importance of exhibiting appropriate social skills when interacting with students, the classroom teacher, other school personnel, and parents. They have the temperament to be able to remain calm and think logically in a crisis. They use logical and rationale methods for solving problems.

    Ethics

    • An education paraprofessional holds themselves to a high standard of conduct and honors and respects the diversity of students, parents, and other school personnel. They exhibit a thorough understanding and acceptance of the concept of confidentially and maintain this standard in and out of the classroom. They exhibit the traits of honesty, reliability, and trustworthiness. They accept responsibility for their actions and accept direction and feedback with dignity. They exemplify the spirit of being a lifelong learner.

    Involvement

    • An educational paraprofessional exhibits active commitment and involvement in the school system in which they work. They volunteer to help with school-sponsored events. They participate in out-of-school activities, such as athletics, musical programs, field trips, theater performances, and the parent teacher organization. They attend school board meetings when appropriate.
