Job Description for a Preschool Aide

A preschool aide may work in a team with one or more lead teachers as well as other aides. She needs to take direction from the lead teacher to keep the classroom running smoothly and should be patient and work well with others.
  1. Meals

    • A preschool aide sets up meals, assists children in feeding themselves, and cleans up after meals, being mindful of each child's dietary restrictions.

    Toileting

    • A preschool aide assists children in toileting and changes diapers as necessary. The aide reminds potty-training children to use the bathroom and keeps written records of their progress. She changes the clothing of kids who have accidents.

    Activities

    • The aide assists children during teacher-led activities and lessons, and models the correct way to do tasks like cutting and gluing. It may also be necessary to assist teachers with preparation for activities by cutting out or assembling materials.

    Communication With Parents

    • Depending on the preferences of the classroom teachers, aides may be responsible for writing up daily reports on each child's meals, toileting, progress and struggles to be sent home to parents.

    Safety

    • A preschool aide chaperons children when the class is outside the classroom. The aide keeps track of where all children are and helps them cross the street carefully.

    Meetings

    • A preschool aide attends classroom team meetings with the school director or parents as necessary.
