Prepare the boots before turning them into planters. Rubber boots are ideal for this project because they are affordable, readily available and easy to decorate. Line the inside of each boot with a plastic bag or wax paper. This will protect the plant and simplify removing it later. You can also spray the exterior of the boots with a craft adhesive, allowing paint or decorations to last longer.
Collect a variety of craft materials, such as acrylic paints, paintbrushes, sponges, stickers and plastic eyes. Decorations can feature simple patterns, children's names or something more elaborate. For example, a child can glue plastic eyes to the toe of the boot and paint the face of a frog or duck. After the boots have been adorned, spray them with hair spray or craft paint adhesive.
Children can learn about gardening by planting their own flowers in the boots. Help children to select a flower to plant. Fill the boot with soil and place each plant according to the potting instructions you have found for each flower. Kids can water their plants daily and watch them flourish in what used to be simple boots.
The newly altered boots are ideal for display. Kids will take pride in their creations and enjoy showing them off to friends, family and visitors. Place some outside of the preschool, and others on windowsills inside. You may choose to write each child's name on a piece of paper and place it in front of his or her boot. This will make it easy for parents and guardians to find the ones made by their children.
