Multicultural Activity for Preschool

When a child understands the differences between cultures, this can lead to a well-rounded life. Children begin to observe differences between people and lessons on different countries in preschool. Help children appreciate the fact that people have different skin colors or talk with different accents.
  1. Passports

    • Take a picture of each child and print the photo off on the computer to make passports. Cut a piece of paper in half and add multiple pages (enough for each country you wish to discuss). Staple in the center to bind the pieces together. Ask the children to decorate the passport with crayons. Tell the children you are going to explore different countries by learning about food, music and other cultural traits. Share a special custom about a country, such as the fact that French people often eat sandwiches on baguettes. Have the children sample a baguette as a small snack or as a sandwich during lunch. After snack or lunch time, give them a stamp in their passport to represent the country. This activity can be done on multiple days, covering a different country each day.

    Holidays

    • Celebrate world-famous holidays like Chinese New Year in the classroom. For example during Chinese New Year, print off pictures of the animal for the year and ask children to color it. Hand out fortune cookies during snack time. Fly kites during recess because it's a Chinese invention. Other days you can celebrate include Canada Day and Cinco de Mayo.

    Puppets

    • Use paper bags to make multicultural puppets. Ask students to draw a face on the bag. Glue paper flowers below the flap to appear as a lei for Hawaiians or use cotton balls to circle the face like a parka.

    Alphabet

    • Spend time teaching your students alphabet songs from around the world. Explain that other countries speak different languages and their alphabet songs are different. Sing the ABC's then play the Spanish or French alphabet for students. Play it every day and slowly so the children can sing along.
