Anti Biased Multicultural Art Activity for Preschool

Art is a wonderful medium to teach children about different cultures. Children in preschool especially need simple, easy projects that can be completed without too much fuss or supervision.
  1. Face/Body Collage

    • Magazines should contain images of diverse people.

Bring in dozens of magazines and have children cut out face and body parts and put them in the center of the table. The body parts should represent people of diverse races. Using these diverse body parts, children then build a person by gluing different cut-outs onto a piece of construction paper (one piece per child).

    Flag Banner

    • Every child colors in her own flags.

Assign each student a different country's flag to decorate. Show them images of the real flags and have them color in the flags accordingly. Then, string all the flags together to display in your classroom.

    Love Quilt for Valentine's Day

    • Create a love quilt in time for Valentine's Day.

Each child gets assigned the word 'love' in a different language and then decorates that word on an 8x10 sheet of paper, adding romantic touches such as hearts and flowers. Then the teacher helps the children to assemble their words into a quilt by gluing them onto a large backdrop. This can also be done as a "thank-you" quilt or a "hello" quilt.

    Papier-Mache Globes

    • Blow up balloons and have the children cover them with strips of papier-mache. When dry, pop the balloons to get them out. Then have the students decorate their "globes" with the colors of the Earth.
