Colleges That Are Near Somerset, Pennsylvania

Somerset may be a small town in southwestern Pennsylvania just off the Pennsylvania Turnpike; but it has three noted colleges within 34 miles, two of which have been granting degrees since the 19th century. All three offer on-campus housing and have active student groups to help students build new support communities that are not too far from home---at least for Somerset residents.
  1. Saint Vincent College

    • A small Catholic liberal arts college founded in 1846, St. Vincent is governed by the Benedictine tradition. The college is in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, 34 miles northeast of Somerset, and offers 43 undergraduate majors and nine graduate programs in education, business, and health wcience. US News & World Report has ranked Saint Vincent a Tier 3 college with a student population of approximately 1,800 people. Class sizes are small with an average of 15 students. Among the scholarships it offers are STEP scholarships, which cover full tuition costs for four years for incoming accepted freshman who will major in biochemistry or bioinformatics, or minor in biotechnology, and participate during their freshman and sophomore years in the Collaborative Learning Program. Saint Vincent has a rolling admissions policy, which means that the college will contact applicants soon after all materials have been received. Taken into consideration are applicants' admission essay, recommendations, grade-point average, class ranking, standardized test scores and extracurricular activities.

    University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown

    • The first and largest regional campus of the University of Pittsburgh and founded in 1927, the Johnstown campus offers 47 undergraduate majors, three associate degrees, and three graduate degrees to a student body of over 3,000 people. The city of Johnstown is located 26 miles northeast of Somerset. US News & World Report has ranked it a Tier 1 baccalaureate college and the No. 8 public school in the Northeast region. Johnstown has rolling admissions and notifies applicants quickly. To apply, high school transcripts and official scores from either the ACT or SAT standardized tests are required. Letters of recommendation and personal essays are encouraged but not required. With three letters of recommendation, including one from the applicant's guidance counselor and another from the applicant's principal or superintendent, and an admissions interview, they could be accepted into Johnson's Early Admission Program for accelerated high school students graduating early.

    Frostburg State Univesity

    • Located in Maryland's Allegheny Mountains, 33 miles south of Somerset, Pa., and founded in 1898, Frostburg State University offers 45 undergraduate majors and seven master's programs to over 5,000 students. Scholarships are available from 25 of Frostburg's academic departments for eligible students. Frostburg classes have an average 18 to 1 student to faulty ratio with 85% of them having fewer than 30 students. Frostburg has many on-site student services, including a 24-hour computer lab with printers. To apply to Frostburg, applicants must send high school transcripts and official scores from either the ACT or SAT standardized tests. Letters of recommendation and a personal essay are optional. The early decision deadline is December 15. Regular admissions have a rolling deadline.
