Harcum College offers a veterinary technician training program that prepares graduates for Pennsylvania's certification examination and the assistant technician exam administered by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science. A personal essay, reference letter and coursework in algebra, biology and chemistry are required for admission. This six-semester program consists of general education courses in the liberal arts and sciences, in addition to specialized training in animal science and clinical care. Two 12-week practicum courses in local hospital clinics are also required.

Lehigh Carbon Community College provides an Associate of Applied Science degree program designed for aspiring veterinary technicians. Applicants must complete eight hours of shadowing experience at a veterinary clinic. This two-year program consists of four semesters and two summer sessions of training in animal disease, anatomy and physiology, surgical assisting, radiology, anesthesia, pharmacology, veterinary medical nursing, diagnostic laboratory work, animal nutrition and veterinary practice management. An external internship in a professional clinical setting is also required.

The Vet Tech Institute provides a veterinary technician associate degree program at its Pittsburgh location. Students receive training in handling and restraining techniques for animals, veterinary practice administration, anesthesia, pharmacology, radiology and various medical procedures, such as sterilization. Additional course topics include surgical assistance, laboratory analysis, nursing and the administration of medicine. The final two months of this program consist of a professional external internship at an animal clinic, veterinary hospital, research facility or farm.

Wilson College offers a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in veterinary medical technology with two optional concentrations: veterinary biology or veterinary business management. This program consists of theoretical, laboratory and clinical training in surgical nursing, animal handling, X-ray technology, anesthesia, anatomy and physiology, parasitology, pharmacology and laboratory testing techniques. Additional concentration coursework may include microbiology, biochemistry, veterinary science, small business management, accounting and marketing.
