Vet Tech Colleges & Programs in Pennsylvania

The U.S. Department of Labor Employment and Training Administration predicts that the demand for veterinary technologists in the state of Pennsylvania will increase by 36 percent from 2006 through 2016, making the field the seventh-fastest-growing occupation. A small number of colleges in Pennsylvania offer veterinary technology programs. Carrying the accreditation of the American Veterinary Medicine Association, these schools prepare students for state credentialing.
  1. Harcum College

    • Originally founded as a post-secondary school for women, Harcum College is now a private, nonsectarian co-educational institution located in Bryn Mawr, 11 miles from Philadelphia. The college offers a six-semester Associate of Applied Science degree in Veterinary Technology. Among the courses required for the program are radiology, clinical chemistry, pathology, anesthesia, exotic animals and animal nutrition. All students complete two 12-week internships prior to graduation, one of which focuses with small animal medicine and the other on large animals. Approximately 92 percent of students at Harcum receive some type of financial aid, reports the college's website. The college sponsors an on-site daycare center that provides low-cost childcare for students' children.

    The Vet Tech Institute

    • The Vet Tech Institute is a private, for-profit career training college with a campus in downtown Pittsburgh. The school specializes in veterinary technology programs and grants an Associate in Specialized Technology degree in the field. The program requires 18 months of full-time study to complete with the majority of classes taking place in mock laboratories or at the school's on-site kennel, which is open to the public. The program covers blood, tissue and urine specimen collection and laboratory analysis, radiology, surgical assisting, anesthesia, injections and intravenous infusions. Federal financial aid is available for eligible students. The school offers job placement assistance for all graduates.

    Lehigh Carbon Community College

    • A public institution, Lehigh Carbon Community College opened in 1966 and since that time has grown to an enrollment of more than 8,000 students. The college offers a 2-year Associate of Applied Science degree in Veterinary Technology that covers the care and health of small, exotic and large animals. Students in the program take courses in a variety of subjects, including anatomy, computer science, physiological chemistry, microbiology, parasitology, technical writing, anesthesia and radiology. The program requires a one-semester internship at a local veterinary clinic or farm. The college participates in federal and state loan and grant programs and offers a limited number of scholarships. Job placement assistance is available through the college.
