Vet Tech Programs in Northern California

Veterinary technologists, also called vet techs, assist veterinarians by performing laboratory tests, radiography, dental care, diagnosis and treatment of animal illness and injury. Veterinary technologists may work for a veterinarian, zoo, boarding kennel, animal shelter, animal league or animal research facility. In Northern California, veterinary technologists are required to be registered with the state veterinary medical board. Registration requirements include graduating from an accredited veterinary technologist program and passing the state board exam.

    • Cosumnes River College is located in Sacramento. The school offers a two-year associate's degree in veterinary technology, and the program is accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association. Students will learn about animal behavior, nutrition, emergency care, dental care, laboratory procedures and restraining animals safely. Financial aid is available to qualified veterinary technology students.

    Western Career College

    • A two-year associate's degree in veterinary technology is available at Western Career College. The program is offered in Pleasant Hill and is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges. The program focuses on teaching students the fundamentals of anatomy, physiology, chemistry, biology and office administration. Students much participate in a clinical rotation and an externship prior to receiving a degree. Graduates will be prepared to take the state veterinary technician board exam in California. Eligible students may receive financial aid through the U.S. Department of Education.

    Foothill College

    • Foothill College is located in Los Altos and offers students a two-year associate's degree in veterinary technology. The program is accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Activities. Courses include animal care skills, medical calculations, microbiology and animal diseases. Students are required to complete an internship prior to graduating. Foothill College also requires veterinary technology graduates to have a valid CPR certificate. Foothill College students may be eligible for tuition assistance in the form of loans, grants and scholarships.
