Since 1905, many American and foreign musicians counted among the world's most talented have received their training at the Juilliard School in New York City. After his appointment as Juilliard's president, William Schuman introduced the Literature and Materials of Music curriculum to replace traditional theory, composition and counterpoint classes, which he felt were of little relevance in the training of musicians. Famous Juilliard graduates include composers Bill Conte and Steve Reich and performers Barry Manilow, Wynton Marsalis, Itzhak Perlman and Tito Puente.

The Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory of Music in St. Petersburg, Russia, was founded in 1862 through the work of Anton Rubinstein at the Russian Conservatory. Of the 1,500 students annually attending the school, 250 are international students. Major areas of study include training in performance, composition and theory, conducting, musicology and choreography. The school's most notable alums include Peter Tchaikovsky, Serge Prokofiev, George Balanchine and Dmitri Shostakovich.

The University Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria, named after one of Salzburg's most famous musicians, has been one of Europe's premier schools of music since it opened in 1841. The 1,500 students enrolled in the university can receive instruction in all instruments, composition, conducting, singing, musical theater, dance, educational theory and musicology.
