Famous Music Colleges

From Gambia to Great Britain, from Iran to Italy, hundreds of music schools train young musicians around the globe. For some of these schools, fame comes in the form of recognition of the school's alumni. Other music schools are well known for their faculty members who perform with professional music organizations.
  1. The Juilliard School

    • Since 1905, many American and foreign musicians counted among the world's most talented have received their training at the Juilliard School in New York City. After his appointment as Juilliard's president, William Schuman introduced the Literature and Materials of Music curriculum to replace traditional theory, composition and counterpoint classes, which he felt were of little relevance in the training of musicians. Famous Juilliard graduates include composers Bill Conte and Steve Reich and performers Barry Manilow, Wynton Marsalis, Itzhak Perlman and Tito Puente.

    Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory of Music, St. Petersburg

    • The Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory of Music in St. Petersburg, Russia, was founded in 1862 through the work of Anton Rubinstein at the Russian Conservatory. Of the 1,500 students annually attending the school, 250 are international students. Major areas of study include training in performance, composition and theory, conducting, musicology and choreography. The school's most notable alums include Peter Tchaikovsky, Serge Prokofiev, George Balanchine and Dmitri Shostakovich.

    The National Conservatory of Music and Dance

    • Graduates of the National Conservatory of Music and Dance in Paris, which was founded in 1795, include Hector Berlioz, Georges Bizet, Nadia Boulanger, Pierre Boulez, Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel and Camille Saint-Saens. Conservatory students can receive instruction in composition, theory, conducting, classical and contemporary instrumental disciplines, vocal disciplines, jazz improvisation, musicology and early music. There are also majors in dance and sound recording.

    Royal Academy of Music

    • In addition to Sir Elton John and Annie Lennox, alumni of the Royal Academy of Music include many of the most famous names in music today, while the Royal Academy's faculty list reads like a roster of England's best-known musicians. The academy has been training musicians since 1822 and received a Royal Charter from King George IV in 1830. Today the Royal Academy is a college of the University of London.

    University Mozarteum

    • The University Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria, named after one of Salzburg's most famous musicians, has been one of Europe's premier schools of music since it opened in 1841. The 1,500 students enrolled in the university can receive instruction in all instruments, composition, conducting, singing, musical theater, dance, educational theory and musicology. Among its famous graduates are composers Carl Orff and Paul Hindemith.
