A nationwide private institution specializing in veterinary technology training, the Vet Tech Institute operates a branch in St. Louis with the cooperation of Hickey College. The school's training program has the accreditation of the AVMA and the school is accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools. With full-time study, students can complete the course requirements necessary for the degree in only 16 months. A private institution, Brown Mackie College in St. Louis offers an Associate of Applied Science degree in veterinary technology. Although the school is not accredited by the AVMA as of June 2010, it does have the approval of the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools. The curriculum of the veterinary tech program requires students to take just one course per month, allowing them to focus fully on one area of study at a a time. Among the topics covered in the program are record-keeping, law and ethics, animal safety and behavior, grooming and drug administration. Qualified students can benefit from state and federal loan and grants while studying at Brown Mackie College.

Located in Fenton, Sanford-Brown College is approximately 18 miles from St. Louis (approximately 30 minutes by automobile). The school has accreditation from the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools and its Associate of Applied Science degree program in veterinary technology is also approved by the AVMA. The program covers pharmacology, anesthesia, surgical assisting, office and hospital management and animal care. At the end of the two-year curriculum, students participate in a clinical internship, gaining hands-on training in local veterinary clinics. The college participates in federal and state loan and grant programs and work-study programs, and offers job placement assistance for all graduates. A limited number of institutional scholarships are also available for Sanford-Brown students.
