Colleges in Pennsylvania That Are Good For the Animal Welfare Law

For prospective lawyers with an interest in animal welfare, completing courses in animal law should be part of their law school curriculum. Practicing animal law may include cases that protect animals from humans or humans from animals, on an individual or larger scale. According to the American Bar Association, the four main routes to a career in animal law are government work, nonprofit organizations, private practice and pro bono work integrated with another practice area. According to the school's website, U Penn Law is recognized for its cross-disciplinary curriculums and world-renowned expert faculty members. U Penn Law School offers institutes and programs in 13 areas including its Program on Law, Environment and Economy. The program offers seminar courses in animal law and ethnics in addition to 14 other areas, which provide students a focal point to their law degree. U Penn Law also has a mandatory pro bono requirement and an animal law project, which supports animal advocates and provides education to the public.

    • Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) is a public research university with 23 campuses across the state. U.S. News and World Report in 2010 ranked the university among the top 20 out of 50 best public national universities in the country. The Dickinson Law School at Penn State places an emphasis on public service involvement through pro bono research programs, fellowships, externships and clinic experiences. Graduates of the school have secured positions with organizations such as the U.S. Department of Justice and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Fields of study are divided into eight programs. The Land Use and Environmental Law program includes animal law coursework with an emphasis on animal exploitation, protection laws and contract issues related to animals.     • Drexel University in Philadelphia is the Pennsylvania's only mandatory co-operative education (co-op) program and one of three in the nation. The university was also the first in the nation to operate a fully wireless campus. The Earle Mack School of Law at Drexel University is one of the only schools to offer the joint J.D. (juris doctor) and Ph.D (doctor of philosophy) law and psychology program, in addition to the traditional J.D. program. The J.D. program curriculum includes the combination of theory and practice during the first year, with upper-level curriculum including an array of courses such as in animal rights law. The program includes three concentration options in business and entrepreneurship law, intellectual property law and health law.
