Colleges in Pennsylvania for the Handicapped & Learning Disabled

Edinboro University, Montgomery County Community College and Drexel University all have programs in place to make the transition from home to college successful for students with physical and learning disabilities. Through programs that assist students with their studies, access to state of the art technology and special opportunities for scholarships and trips abroad, these Pennsylvania institutions of higher education offer students the opportunity to achieve a degree of their choice with assistance tailored to their specific disability.
  1. Edinboro University

    • Edinboro University is located about 23 miles south of Erie, Pennsylvania. The university has an office for students with disabilities and a Learning Disability Services program. The Learning Disability Services program assists students in making alternate test arrangements, and it provides priority class scheduling and academic consulting.

      The Office for Students with Disabilities offers several amenities for students, including a wheelchair maintenance program, van transportation and a Living Skills Center, which works with students to help bridge school and home. The university also offers a recreation facility that is designed to be used by students who have disabilities. The facility houses special fitness equipment, video games, table tennis and other recreational activities.

    Montgomery County Community College

    • Montgomery County Community College is located in the northwest suburbs of Philadelphia. Its Disability Services Center works with students to provide accommodations and support as they transition into college. Services provided to students include tutoring with a learning specialist in which students learn techniques on note taking, time management and test taking, as well as academic advising in which students work with advisers to plan their schedules and take into account mobility and learning issues. The center also provides assistant technology to students, in order to increase their access to computers. Some of this technology includes closed circuit television for students who have low vision, a Type N' Speak for those with blindness, trackballs for those who have physical disabilities, and a Read and Write program for students who have learning disabilities.

    Drexel University

    • Drexel University is located in Philadelphia, and it has an Office of Disability Services that works with students to assist them in obtaining a quality education at the university. The program requests that students who have a disability register with the program, if they are in need of auxiliary aides or particular accommodations. Requests are taken case by case, and they're answered in a timely manner, according to the university. The center also arranges activities and programs for students with disabilities, such as trips to foreign countries and paid internships.
