Colleges in Pennsylvania for Civil Engineering

A number of colleges in Pennsylvania offer degree programs in civil engineering, a field of study the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts will grow by 24 percent from 2008 through 2018. Combining classroom lectures with design courses, Pennsylvania's civil engineering colleges are among some of the highest rated universities in the country.

    • Located in Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University is a private institution with nearly 6,000 undergraduate students. U.S. News and World Report ranked the nonsectarian college twenty-second among all universities in the United States in 2010. The Carnegie Institute, the school's engineering college, accepts only the best students; typically those that receive admission are in the top 9 percent of their high school graduating class. Students who receive an invitation into the engineering program participate in a specialized freshman year course of study that provides mentoring and academic support to help students succeed as they move on to specialize in civil engineering.

    Bucknell University

    • Founded in 1849, Bucknell University is a private, nonsectarian college in Lewisburg, approximately 75 miles north of Harrisburg. The college is home to more than 3,500 undergraduate students and received the thirtieth-place ranking among liberal arts colleges in the United States from U.S. News and World Report in 2010. In addition to the core engineering courses, students in the bachelor's of civil engineering program take courses in natural science, English, social sciences, mathematics and computer science. Students in the program have the option to spend one semester studying water system design in Suriname.

    Drexel University

    • In 2010, Philadelphia-based Drexel University ranked eighty-eighth among all universities in the United States according to U.S. News and World Report. The private, independent college has nearly 11,000 undergraduate students and offers both bachelor's and graduate degrees in civil engineering. Primary focuses of Drexel's program in the field are construction management and engineering, architectural building systems, structural materials, geotechnical design and environmental and water resources. Students at the university have the opportunity to assist with faculty research projects and to conduct independent studies of their own.

    Pennsylvania State University at University Park

    • With an undergraduate enrollment of nearly 38,000 students, Pennsylvania State University at University Park is the largest college in the state. The public university was founded in 1855 and is 90 miles west of Harrisburg. The civil engineering program allows students to focus on geotechnics, water systems, construction, materials and environmental design. The college offers a co-operative education program for engineering students that allows them to work at paying jobs in the field while attending classes. For graduates, the civil engineering department helps students find employment in the field through job search assistance.
