The Australian National University offers a four-year bachelor of engineering degree. Students choose from several major areas including electronics and communications, mechanical and materials, sustainable energy and mechatronics. The program is accredited by Engineers Australia and prepares students for a career in design, management, education or research. The first year of the degree includes common-stream courses such as fundamentals of engineering and basic sciences, while the remaining years allow students to customize their degree through elective choices. Courses are taught in small classes and a significant emphasis is placed on design and project assignments. A three- to six-month internship allows students to gain practical experience in the engineering industry. During the final year of the program students complete a group project and an independent project.
