How to Convert a Raster Map to Vector

A raster map is a bitmap image. If you zoom in on a bitmap graphic on your monitor, the resolution or clearness becomes distorted. Vector images, on the other hand, can be zoomed in and magnified and the quality and clearness of the graphic remains unaffected. To ensure raster map images don't lose their quality when magnified, you can convert them to a vector image. Conversion software is available that allows you to turn any raster map into a vector-based graphic.

Instructions

    • 1

Download and install conversion software capable of converting raster maps to vector images. Popular conversion tools include VextraSoft, R2V and Raster to Vector (see Resources). Launch the conversion tool once installation has completed.

    • 2

Import your bitmap image. Click "File" from the top menu of your conversion software and then click "Import." Click on "Modify/Trace Bitmap." The Trace Bitmap control window will pop up. You will notice four parameters.

    • 3

Configure the first parameter, which is the color threshold. You have to choose a number between 1 and 500. The higher the number, the less color your image will have. Choose the default setting or 25.

    • 4

Configure the second parameter, which is the minimum area. The range for the minimum area is between 1 and 1,000. This is the number of pixels for every color in the image. Select the default of 1 which is the most detailed.

    • 5

Configure the third parameter, which is the curve fit that determines how smooth the outlines will be. Your choices are very tight, normal, smooth or very smooth. Choose the one that meets your needs.

    • 6

Configure the fourth parameter, which is the corner threshold. There are three choices: many corners, normal or few. The more corners there are, the more details you will have. Choose the default.

    • 7

Click "Convert." Determine a location to save the vector image to and click "OK."
