How to Convert Scaled Feet to Proportion

If you ever looked at a map, you likely noticed the distance between two places are not always the same. That's because different map scales are used to represent distances on a map in direct proportion to the distances on land. The proportion is equal to a statement of equivalency, a measurement unit equal to a bar scale, which is a drawn non-standard unit in the scale key section or equal to a representative fraction.

Instructions

  1. Statement of Equivalency

    • 1

Measure the distance between two points on a map, using the ruler.

    • 2

Multiply the scaled feet on the map by the scale number. If the scale is 1 foot equals 4 miles, multiply 1 times 4.

    • 3

Calculate the conversion. In this example, the converted scaled feet to proportion is 4.

    Bar Scale

    • 4

Measure the distance between two points on a map, using the ruler.

    • 5

Compare the measurement to the scale key on the map. Multiply the measurement units from the scale by the scale number. If the measurement equals 4 units on the scale key, and the scale number equals 5 miles, multiply 4 times 5.

    • 6

Calculate the conversion. For this example, the proportion is 20 miles.

    Representative Fraction

    • 7

Measure the distance between two points on a map, using the ruler.

    • 8

Multiply the scaled measurement on the map by the ratio number. If the scale is 1:2563, it means 1 inch is equal to 2,563 miles. If you measured 3 inches, multiply 3 times 2,563.

    • 9

Calculate the conversion. For this example, the proportion is 7,689.
