How to Convert Velocity to Volume

The volume to velocity conversion is common calculation for engineers that work with structures containing a flow of water, air or other material. It's an important calculation for factories and builders alike in estimating the length of time it will take a given amount of material to move through a piping or ducting system. The conversion equation tells you that volume in cubic feet per minute equals velocity in linear feet per minute times area.       Determine the velocity of the material. Assume, for example, the velocity is 320 linear feet per minute.

      Measure the width and height of the piping or ducting that is carrying the flow and multiply them together. For example, if the pipe is 6 inches wide and 6 inches tall, multiply six times six to get 36 square inches.

      Convert square inches to square feet by multiplying your square-inch value by 0.00694. In the example, 0.00694 x 36 = 0.25. The area is 0.25 square feet.

      Multiply velocity times area to complete your own velocity to volume conversion. In the example, 320 x 0.25 = 80. The volume is 80 cubic feet per minute.
