Stack the firewood in tight piles. The tighter you can stack the wood, the more accurate your calculation of firewood volume will be.
Use the measuring tape to measure the dimensions of your firewood pile. Be sure to measure the length, width and height.
Compute the volume in cubic feet by multiplying the length times the width times the height. For example, if you had a stack of wood that is 15 feet long, 4 feet wide and 6 feet tall, you would multiply 15 by 4 by 6 to find the volume would be 360 cubic feet.
Divide the volume in cubic feet by 128 to convert from cubic feet to cords of firewood. Completing the example, you would divide 360 by 128 to find that you had 2.8125 cords of firewood.
