International Engineering Colleges

Like their U.S. counterparts, international engineering universities offer undergraduate and graduate degrees in a variety of engineering disciplines, including civil, environmental, chemical, materials, electric and more. Students at these universities have opportunities to pursue research opportunities and work with faculty members and professional engineers. The U.S. News and World Report offers ratings of some of the top international engineering universities.
  1. University of Cambridge

    • The Department of Engineering at the University of Cambridge was founded in 1875 and is located in the United Kingdom. The university offers both undergraduate and graduate programs in engineering, and students have the opportunity to pursue numerous engineering disciplines involving energy and fluid mechanics; electrical engineering; materials and design; civil and environmental engineering; and manufacturing and information engineering. Research opportunities are available in bioengineering, engineering for clinical practice and healthcare engineering.

    The University of Tokyo

    • Located in Japan and established in 1886, the University of Tokyo's School of Engineering offers engineering programs in a variety of fields through its graduate school, including systems innovation, nuclear engineering and management, precision engineering, urban engineering, and technology management for innovation. Students can also pursue research opportunities with the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) and Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST).

    Swiss Federal Institute of Technology

    • The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology was founded in 1855 and educates more than 16,000 students from 80 different countries per year, as of 2011. The university is located in Zurich, and educational opportunities are available at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Students can pursue programs in engineering sciences, mathematics, construction sciences and architecture. Research opportunities are available in climate system modeling, micro and nano science, electromagnetics, and environmentalism and sustainability.

    National University of Singapore

    • Founded in 1980, the engineering department at the National University of Singapore has ten engineering programs involving bioengineering, engineering science, mechanical engineering, engineering and technology management, electrical and computer engineering, and more. As of 2011, the engineering department has over 10,000 students enrolled in these programs. Research centers at the India university include Centre for Offshore Research & Engineering (CORE), Centre for Protective Technology (CPT) and Minerals, Metals & Materials Technology Centre (M3TC).
