India boasts some of the best law colleges in the world. Graduates from law school start their independent practice, work as legal advisers or go into research and teaching. If you plan to pursue a career in law, there are many colleges in India to consider. Each college has its own testing procedure, although efforts are being made to establish a common entrance process, akin to LSAT. Some law colleges in India have enrolled for the Common Law Admission Test and LSAT-India.
  1. National Law School of India

    • The National Law School of India University (NLSIU), established in 1987, is located in Bangalore, Karnataka. The school's education takes the form of lectures, discussions, case studies and moot courts (simulated court proceedings). At the undergraduate level, students enroll in bachelor's of law (LL.B.) degrees consisting of 14 trimesters. The curriculum includes constitutional, criminal, family, property, insurance, international and labor law. The school also offers master's in law (LL.M.) degrees, in which students learn about judicial process, Indian constitutional law and research methodology. To earn a master's, students complete all prescribed courses and undergo a six-week placement training. During these six weeks, students work under the supervision of experienced lawyers or teach law. Those interested in research enroll in master's of philosophy (M.Phil.), doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.) and doctor of law (LL.D.) degrees.

    NALSAR University of Law

    • NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad is a residential university established in 1998. According to its website, the objective of the university is to "evolve and impart comprehensive legal education at all levels to achieve excellence." Admission to the five-year bachelor's of law (LL.B.) is based on the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT). As of 2010, 11 out of 14 national law universities of India are member of the common testing process. Areas of testing include English grammar and vocabulary, math, logical reasoning and general knowledge. Students with secondary school diploma (equivalent to the high school diploma in the U.S.) are eligible to take CLAT.

      The bachelor's program at NALSAR consists of ten semesters, during which students receive instruction about legal methods and laws pertaining to corporations, family, property and labor, among others. The master's of law is a two-year course, with concentrations in human rights, environmental law, intellectual property, international trade and business laws. In addition to the M.Phil. and Ph.D., the university grants postgraduate diplomas in patents, media, cyber laws and international humanity.

    University of Delhi

    • The university of Delhi established the faculty for law in 1924. The faculty grants bachelor's of law (LL.B.), master's of laws (LL.M.), doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.), doctor of civil law (D.C.L.) and master's of comparative law (M.C.L.) degrees. The medium of instruction is English; however, students have a choice to receive instruction in Hindi, the national language of India. Exclusively for students with foreign law degrees, the university offers a two-year master's of comparative law (M.C.L.) degree. Students complete courses prescribed for LL.M., including a thesis.
