Boston College (BC) is the home of one of the top law schools in the nation. U.S. News and World Report ranked laws schools according a number of different criteria, including selectivity, LSAT scores and surveys submitted by lawyers, professors and school deans. Boston College emerged as the 26th highest-rated program in the nation for 2009, which was the highest ranking by a non-university-based law school. Founded in 1929, BC enrolls approximately 800 law students per year and has a student-to-faculty ratio of 13.5 to 1. BC offers a full-time J.D. program; it also offers a number of joint-degree programs in conjunction with the J.D. Joint-degrees include the J.D/M.B.A. (master of business administration combination, J.D./M.S.W. (master of social work) and the J.D./M.Ed. or M.A. (master of education or master of Arts). A Ph.D. is also possible through the college.

Lewis and Clark College, located in Portland, Oregon, was ranked 61st overall for 2009 by U.S. News and World Report. While Lewis and Clark does not offer the wide variety of joint-degree programs of those found at Boston College, it does offer the J.D. degree with a number of specializations. These include specialties in environmental and natural resources law, business law, tax law, intellectual property law, criminal law and public interest law. The college does offer the LL.M. (master of laws) degree for those entering the field of environmental and natural resources law. Other areas of specialty offered by the school include Indian law, global law and animal law.

The William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul, Minnesota, was rated as a third-tier college of law by U.S. News and World Report. The Mitchell College offers students flexible scheduling, with both full-time and part-time programs available. Although the William Mitchell program only offers the J.D. degree, it does offer a variety of specialization areas for its students. Some of these include business law, civil litigation, commercial law, criminal law, estate planning, family law, government practice, public interest and tax law. The Mitchell College also offers a nationally ranked clinical law program in most of these fields.
