The University of Pennsylvania’s Law School offers students a duel J.D. and M.B.E. degree in bioethics in conjunction with the Department of Medical Ethics. Students may also choose to minor in bioethics while majoring in any other program. Ranked in the top ten best schools in the nation in over ten fields of study, including law schools for 2014 by "U.S. News & World Report," the University of Pennsylvania provides students with world renowned facilities in which to study and practice. Numerous research projects and consulting opportunities are available for students to expand their classroom training. Fellowships within the bioethics field are also available for recent graduates.
Boston University, ranked 2014’s second best healthcare law school in the nation by "U.S. News & World Report," offers a joint J.D. and M.P.H. with concentration in health law, bioethics, and human rights concentration. Students must enroll with the School of Law and School of Public Health for this program. Students are encouraged to participate in externships and law clinics, allowing for hands-on experience working with clients in the field of bioethics. Clinic options range from public defender programs to juvenile public defender programs. Externships are available in health law, community courts, and judicial. Students may also choose to work with top notch faculty members on research projects, or design their own.
The University of Pittsburgh, ranked among the top 20 medical research schools by "U.S. News & World Report" for 2014, offers an intensive joint J.D. and M.A. in Bioethics. This program allows students to work closely with top faculty and requires two clinical practica courses. During the first practicum, students gain a deeper understanding of the clinical setting by working with health care professionals and being a part of ethics consultations and teaching sessions. In the second practicum, students conduct a four-week rotation in a clinical facility and relate the experience to their legal studies as part of their thesis project. Upon completion, students will be eligible for the Health Law Certificate in addition to their joint degree.
Case Western Reserve University, ranked fifth best health law school for 2014 by U.S. News and World Report, offers a duel M.A. in Bioethics and JD program in partnership with the Department of Bioethics and School of Law. Students must apply and be accepted into each program to qualify for the duel option. Third year students have the opportunity to work in the Kramer Law Clinic through an internship and gaining course credit. This provides valuable opportunities to gain working experience in the bioethical field and assisting members of the community. Several judicial externships are available to students as well as moot court competitions which provide valuable trial and advocacy experience.
