Veterinarian Colleges in Kentucky

Veterinary medicine and the practice of veterinary science involve the study and care of animals. Animal care requires specific training, whether one handles domesticated animals or those found in the wild. Veterinarians perform duties ranging from basic care and diagnoses, to various level of surgery and procedures. A veterinarian needs to be educated in all levels of such concerns, and in the state of Kentucky, there are a number of veterinary programs offering a range of opportunities.
  1. University of Kentucky

    • The University of Kentucky's Department of Veterinary Science was established in 1889, and offers an array of undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral opportunities. The school has a veterinary agreement program with Alabama's Tuskegee Institute and Auburn University, offering more than 30 places for residents of Kentucky. The University of Kentucky offers pre-veterinary courses in animal sanitation, disease control, anatomy, and physiology. Graduate students may obtain either a master of science or a doctorate in Veterinary Science. Postdoctorates may participate in various research areas as well. The department offers Equine, Animal Genetic Testing, and Livestock Disease Research. Students should contact the program with any questions or concerns.

    Morehead State University

    • Morehead State University offers degree programs in Veterinary Science and Veterinary Technology. Veterinary Science students may pursue a bachelor's degree, while Veterinary Technology students may pursue either a two year associate's degree option, or a bachelor's option. Veterinary Science students will take pre-set curriculum including Agricultural and Veterinary Science, along with courses in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Electives include Small and Large Animal Clinics, Genetics and Immunology. Students choosing the Vet Tech option, will take required courses in Animal Care Techniques, and Veterinary Clinical Pathology, in addition to various others.     Brown Mackie College

    • Brown Mackie College's Louisville campus houses a Veterinary Technology program, with an associate's degree offering. The courses focus on general veterinary issues, including animal medical issues, methods used when preparing for surgery, and nursing tools used in overall veterinary care. Students are under the direction of a veterinarian when conducting various procedures, as to receive hands-on training in a realistic environment. The college offer a unique class scheduling option, in that students may take only course each month. This structure is meant to enable a student to focus on one class without having to carry a large load. The school officially began almost 120 years ago in 1892, but has been in its current structure since 2004.
