Cornell University's College of Veterinary Medicine, located in Ithaca, includes an animal health diagnostic center that is run in partnership with the New York State Department of Agriculture. Also located on campus is an animal hospital, feline health center, a cancer research institute and the Baker Institute for Animal Health, a premier research facility studying immunology, infectious diseases and animal genetics. Tufts University's Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine is located in North Grafton, MA. Opened in 1978, its campus includes three teaching hospitals focusing on small and large animals as well as wildlife. A third veterinary college in the northeast is located at the University of Pennsylvania.
The midwest offers a number of veterinary colleges across ten states. Ohio State's College of Veterinary Medicine is located in Columbus; the college's Veterinary Medical Center sees more than 35,000 animal patients a year including pets and farm animals. College researchers developed the first feline leukemia vaccine and are on the leading edge in the field of orthopedics. The University of Wisconsin's program, in Madison, boasts its high success rate in attracting research grants from the the National Institute of Health. Research programs include animal cancer and comparative ocular pathology.
The South also offers a number of colleges in the field of veterinary medicine. Located in College Station, Texas A & M's College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences is considered a major educational, medical and research player in the field. In addition to the study of small and large animal sciences, the school houses two research centers. The Schubot Exotic Bird Health Center researches the cause, treatment and prevention of avian disease, while the Winnie Carter Wildlife Center focuses on exotic and wildlife species. The veterinary program at North Carolina State University, located in Raleigh, offers instruction in three departments -- clinical sciences, molecular biomedical sciences and population health and pathobiology.
Oregon State University's College of Veterinary Medicine, located in Corvallis, is divided into two academic departments. The Department of Biomedical Sciences focuses on the study of anatomy, pathology, immunology and infectious diseases. This area of study also encompasses issues of animal diseases and their relation to public health. The Department of Clinical Sciences includes the study of surgery, oncology, cardiology, diagnostic imaging and anesthesiology. This department also includes the field of rural veterinary practice. Two California colleges offer veterinary medicine programs -- Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona and University of California in Davis.
