Affiliated with Ivy League Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine was established in 1894 and is a private institution. Students in the school's Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program spend the first two full years and the first semester of their third year taking core courses in animal anatomy, cell biology, parasitology, diseases and pathology. During this time, students have the option to take electives in fields like oncology, exotic animal health or horse health. Clinical rotations begin the second semester of students' third term and continue throughout the fourth year of the program. All students have the option to complete summer externships to gain experience in specialty fields of medicine like large animal or wild life medicine.

A public institution, the University of California at Davis School of Veterinary Medicine is home to approximately 500 Doctor of Veterinary Medicine students at its campus 15 miles west of Sacramento. The first three years of the program include the core courses in veterinary medicine like anatomy, nutrition, radiology and pathology as well as courses that deal with specific organs like the respiratory or neurological systems. Students take classes in small animal, food animal, horse and large animal health as a part of this required curriculum. During their fourth and final year of the program, students participate in eight clinical rotations in areas of specialization that match their personal interests and professional goals.

Located in Tuskegee, a community 40 miles northeast of Montgomery, Tuskegee University was founded in 1881 by African American political figure Booker T. Washington. A historically black school, the university's College of Veterinary Medicine Nursing and Allied Health opened in 1944. The university's four-year Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program consists of three years of core coursework and one year of clinical experience. Students gain experience working with both small and large animals through the required curriculum. Tuskegee also provides veterinary students with a number of opportunities to participate in scientific research both in laboratory facilities on campus and field settings in places as distant as Africa and India.
