Degree Programs for an Occupational Therapy Assistant

Occupational therapy assistants work with patients with disabilities that are mental, physical and developmental in nature. Purposeful activities such as reaching for objects, brushing teeth, tying shoes and buttoning clothes are used to help clients function independently. Occupational therapy assistants work in hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, rehabilitation settings, schools and mental health facilities. These professionals are certified and hold state licenses in their field.

The Associate of Applied Science program for occupational therapy assistants is given through a partnering facility, Pulaski Technical College which is accredited by the Accreditaion Council for Occupational Therapy Education of the American Occupation Therapy Association. This program covers 21 months of study and only offers daytime classes. Seventy-seven hours of study are dedicated to the program with nine hours of prerequisite work to be taken at Baptist Health Schools Little Rock. Prospective students must also observe an occupational therapist or an occupational therapy assistant for 20 hours to be eligible for the program. Interested applicants must apply to Baptist Health Schools Little Rock, score an 18 or higher on the ACT, have a GED or high school diploma and submit all official school transcripts.

    Keiser University, Daytona Beach Campus

    • Keiser University's Daytona Beach Campus has an occupational therapy program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education of the American Occupational Therapy Association. This Associate of Science program covers 89.5 credit hours of course work. Students must have a passing score of C or better in each class to continue to the next class. An overall grade point average of 3.0 is needed to begin the program. Interested students need to contact the admissions department to set up an interview and submit an application. In addition, students must submit their high school diploma or GED papers and all official transcripts. An ACT score of 17 or better or an SAT score of 1430 or better is required. If an ACT or SAT has not been taken, an entrance exam must be completed before applying to the program.

    Madison Area Technical College, Wisconsin

    • Madison Area Technical College in Madison, Wisconsin has a program accredited by the Council for Occupational Therapy Education of the American Occupation Therapy Association. Successful candidates will receive an Associate of Applied Science degree. Classes are offered at the Downtown Education Center. This is a two-year program with 70 semester hours of coursework. Candidates must have a high school diploma or GED, have two high school semesters or one college semester of biology, algebra, chemistry and English with a grade of C or better, have a background check, a physical exam and fill out an essential functions form needed for the program. The essential functions form can be picked up at the program office.
