Doctorate Programs for Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy has increasingly become a sought-after program of study. Students are seeking everything from bachelor's to master's and even doctoral degrees in occupational therapy. Occupational therapy has been called a "recession proof" occupation as well. There are a handful of good doctoral programs for occupational therapy at colleges and universities across the country.
  1. Boston University

    • Boston University in Massachusetts has a doctoral program in rehabilitation sciences. In this program, students take courses such as Philosophy of Science, Doctoral Seminar in Rehabilitation Sciences, Statistical Methods and Multivariate Statistics. The doctoral program is based around a mentorship model in which the mentor serves as a guidance counselor among many other roles for the student in the program.

    Unversity of Kansas Doctorate in Occupational Therapy

    • The Department of Occupational Therapy Education at the University of Kansas is part of the School of Allied Health at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Admission requirements to the doctoral program include a degree in occupational therapy from an accredited school and certification through the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy. Students in the doctoral program in occupational therapy can take online classes, evening classes and traditional classes during the weekdays. The program is based on courses such as Specialty Practice and Teaching, Evidence Based Practice and Professional Leadership.

    University of Southern California

    • The doctoral program for occupational therapy at the University of Southern California (USC) has been ranked the number one program in the country in eight of the last nine years. The program at USC was also the first graduate program in occupational therapy and occupational science in the world. Accredited by the Accreditation Council for Ocupational Therapy Education, the USC program offers students both a 1-year and 2-year master's and a Doctor of Philosophy in Occupational Science (Ph.D.) To be admitted to the program, a student is required to have an undergraduate degree from an accredited school with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Three letters of recommendation must be submitted as well as an essay describing the student's goals and professional accomplishments, interests and skills and explanation of why occupational therapy is the program of choice.
