Correspondence Doctorate Programs

Doctoral degrees are available in many fields and offered by both standard and online-only universities. According to the Distance Learning College Guide, when you choose an online, distance learning or correspondence doctorate degree, you'll complete assignments through email, participate in lectures over the Internet, interact with your professors through Web conferencing and work on your dissertation from home. In many cases, you're able to complete research and assignments on your own time, in between work or family obligations.

    • Earn a doctorate in business administration with a specialization in strategy and innovation from the online-only Capella University. Students may complete the program in three years (up to seven years are permitted) and take courses in strategic thinking and innovation, leadership with integrated coaching, global operations, anticipating the future, competing with disruptive innovation, building an innovation strategy, identifying opportunities for innovation and financial decision-making.

      Candidates must have a master's degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Because the program is held online, an Internet connection is required (high speed recommended), along with an email address, minimum 20 GB hard disk space, Microsoft Office, anti-virus software, Windows Media Player, speakers, sound card, video card, minimum 1 GHz processor and minimum 512 MB RAM.

    Musical Arts

    • Further your music education with an online doctor of musical arts through the Boston University Distance Education program. The program includes classroom learning and a dissertation project and takes about three years to complete. Courses include American music, critique in music education, foundations of music education, jazz and popular arranging, orchestration, analytical technique and music and cultural perspectives on the blues.

      Applicants must have a master's degree in music. The minimum technical requirements for the program include 1 GB RAM, 1.7 GHz processor, an Internet connection and an email address.

    • Offered by the University of Phoenix, the online Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership program covers various topics, including social contexts and contemporary issues, communication strategies, fundamental principles of sound research, creative and critical thinking, contemporary policy analysis and development, comparative models of educational environments, the economics of education and leadership in the educational continuum.

      Applicants must have a master's degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA and three years of professional work experience in a leadership program. A laptop computer, Internet access and membership to a research library also are required. Technical requirements include at least 256 MB RAM, 20 GB hard drive, Internet connection, Microsoft Office, Flash Player, printer, sound card, CD ROM, email address, Adobe Reader and a minimum processor speed of 1.6 GHz.
