Kansas State University offers its Ph.D. program through the graduate program in Special Education, Counseling and Student Affairs. The program requires students to complete 63 credit hours for completion. Of these, 15 credit hours are required professional courses in the areas of Higher Education Law, Advanced Student Development Theory in College Student Affairs, Higher Education Finance, Higher Education Administration and Enrollment Management in Higher Education. The University of Iowa also offers its own Ph.D. in Higher Education and Student Affairs. The program offers five major areas of concentration: Foundations of Higher Education; Student Affairs Administration; Organization and Administration of Higher Education; Policy in Higher Education, and Teaching, Learning & Curriculum in Higher Education. The program requires students to complete 90 credit hours in order to graduate with the Ph.D. Of these 90 hours, students complete 24 hours of core courses in areas like finance and higher education, college students and their environment, higher education and the law, college curriculum and organizational theory and administrative behavior. Students also take 18 hours in research methods, 12 hours in their field of concentration and 12 hours of dissertation research.

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR) offers a Ph.D. in Higher Education. The program is offered with several concentrations, one of which is student affairs administration. The program requires 99 credit hours beyond the bachelor's degree or 63 to 69 beyond the master's degree. In the field of student affairs administration, students must complete nine hours in higher education core classes which cover the topics of leadership theories, writing the dissertation and the philosophy and history of higher education. Students also pursue 12 credit hours in research methods such as statistics and qualitative research.
