How to Find Higher Education Degrees

Finding the right college to attend is an important step in the education process. Higher education degrees can be the key to making more money or gaining new employment in the job market. Would-be students often feel compelled to choose a higher education degree program based on what is available to them through local colleges and universities. With a little more research and know-how, however, college students can find degree programs that may better suit their needs.

Determine which degree you wish to obtain. The process of finding higher education degrees is different for graduate students than it is for undergraduate students. Graduate students sometimes choose a degree program based on the scholars they want to work with or based on a school's reputation. Undergraduate students typically choose schools rather than degree programs, but they do sometimes choose schools because they have a strong academic reputation in certain fields of study. Students pursuing specific degrees can first start by visiting the websites of the schools they are thinking about attending. Most schools have links to their academic programs on their homepage or a search engine tool to help you find a specific degree.

Consult the rankings of U.S. News & World Report or other publications like Business Week that rank degree programs in specific disciplines, like business. U.S. News World Report typically provides rankings for graduate degree programs, but it does provide rankings for undergraduate programs in certain disciplines, like engineering and business. It also provides rankings for universities and liberal arts colleges nationwide. Find a school with a strong overall academic reputation and view the school's website to find degree programs of interest.

Conduct online searches through your state's regents for higher education websites. Some states, like Oklahoma, Texas and California, offer potential college students the opportunity to search all degree programs offered in their institutions of higher education. The Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education has an online database that will allow you to search either by institution or by discipline. Finding a degree program in your own state is fairly simple by using this tool. Check with your state board of education or regents for higher education to see if this option is available to you in your state.

Search for similar online degree programs. Online courses are becoming increasingly common both among traditional colleges and universities and schools that specialize in offering only online degrees. One website that can help your search is Get Educated. This website provides reviews of schools and degree programs in traditional and online schools. Most of the degree programs listed on the web site are online degree programs or hybrid programs that combine traditional on-campus coursework with online classes. You can search by institution, degree level and by academic subject.
