Education Specialist Degree Programs

The Education Specialist degree--also known as Ed.S.--is a degree earned between a master's and a doctorate, usually at the end of the sixth year of study. The degree's main purpose is to prepare undergraduate college teachers--often teachers from community colleges and small colleges--for either administration careers or advancement within their departments. An Ed.S. is useful to those who want to further pursue their education after earning a master's degree but not necessarily complete a doctoral program.
  1. University of Alabama

    • The graduate school at the University of Alabama offers an Education Specialist degree that requires at least 30 hours of study on top of a master's degree. During the degree track, students must take upper-level education courses, as well as upper-level courses in their specializing field--such as psychology or English. Each department has its own unique requirements for those specializing while earning an Ed.S. degree, and the entire program must be completed in six years, giving part-time students some flexibility.
