Physician Assistant Degree Programs

Physician assistants are medical professionals that work under the supervision of licensed physicians. PAs are responsible for tasks such as taking patients' histories, prescribing medication, performing surgery and educating patients. It is expected that job opportunities for PAs will increase 39 percent from 2008 to 2018, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.   1. Arcadia University

    • Arcadia University is located in Glenside, Pennsylvania. Arcadia's full-time physician assistant program is 24-months long and prepares students to sit for the national certification exam. Courses included in the program range from anatomy, pharmacology, family medicine, emergency medicine and surgery. In order to gain admission into the program, students must have a bachelor's degree with a 3.0, certain prerequisite courses such as biology and chemistry, two letters of recommendation, 200 patient contact hours, and test scores from either the GRE or MCAT. Students that successfully complete the program receive a master's degree in Physician Assistant studies. Financial assistance is available to students.

    Duke University

    • Duke University is located in Durham, North Carolina. Students that are accepted into the 24-month master's degree PA program take courses in anatomy, physical diagnosis, pharmacology, clinical medicine, emergency medicine and pediatrics. Students who apply should have a bachelor's degree with a GPA of at least 3.2, 14 months of full-time direct patient care experience and at least 48 courses in natural science. Those who apply need to be mature, motivated and have good interpersonal skills. Students can apply for financial assistance upon acceptance into the program.

    Stony Brook University

    • Stony Brook University is located in Stony Brook, New York and offers a two-year master's program in physician assistant studies. Students in the program take courses in anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, physical examination, diagnostic imaging and ten different clinical clerkships. To gain acceptance into the program, you must have a bachelor's degree, a minimum GPA of 2.75, 1,000 hours of patient experience and basic life support (BLS) training in CPR and first aid. Students must also complete prerequisite courses in english, mathematics, biology, genetics and chemistry. Students can sit for the national license exam if they complete the program successfully. Tuition assistance is available to those who qualify.
