Physician Assistant Programs in Wisconsin

Physician assistants, or PAs, must successfully complete a PA program and pass a national examination to receive a license to practice medicine. PAs may examine or treat patients, obtain patient histories, counsel patients or prescribe medication, all under the supervision of a physician. Job opportunities are better than average according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. PA programs are offered at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and Marquette University.

    • The University of Wisconsin-Madison Physician Assistant program is a full-time master's program which accepts approximately 30 students per year. The PA program is offered as a campus-based program which lasts for 24 months. It is also offered as a 36-month distance learning program. Graduates receive a Master of Physician Assistant Studies degree.

      The curriculum covers all aspects of primary patient care with an emphasis on preventive care. Applicants must complete prerequisite courses in subjects such as Human Biochemistry or Biomolecular Chemistry, Anatomy and Physiology, General Chemistry, Psychology, Microbiology and Statistics. Additional requirements include a bachelor's degree and minimum 3.00 GPA. Estimated tuition for in-state students is $3,224. Estimated tuition for out-of state students is $7,772.52.

    University of Wisconsin-La Crosse

    • The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, in conjunction with the Mayo Foundation and the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation, began their Physician Assistant Studies program in 1995. This full-time program is taught at all three institutions. Clinical experience is provided at the Mayo Clinic and Gundersen Lutheran sites, which include the major medical centers as well as smaller sites in rural areas of Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota. Graduates of the PA program receive a Master of Physician Assistant Studies degree.

      Prerequisites for admission include courses in Anatomy and Physiology, Biology, Biological Science, Microbiology, Psychology, Chemistry and Mathematics. Additionally applicants must have bachelor's degree and a minimum GPA of 3.00. Tuition for the 2009/2010 academic year was $14,639.74 for in-state students and $33,223.25 for out-of state students.

    Marquette University

    • Marquette University accepts 50 people into the Physician Assistant program each year. The Department of Physician Assistant Studies' mission is to teach students in the Jesuit tradition of "cura personalis," or "care for the whole person."
      Students with a bachelor's degree must have completed prerequisite courses in inorganic chemistry, psychology, biological sciences, organic chemistry and statistics. The minimum GPA is 3.00 and applicants must fulfill at least 200 hours of health care experience----either on a volunteer or paid basis. Undergraduate students who have completed two years of pre-professional studies and maintain a GPA of 3.00 or greater are also admitted into the program. Tuition for the 2010/2011 school year is $30,040.
