Colleges in California for Teaching

Teachers in the California public school system must hold a single or multiple subject teaching credential. A single subject credential authorizes the teaching of specific subjects and a multiple subject credential allows a person to teach in self-contained classrooms where more than one subject will be taught. Students are granted preliminary credentials and have five years to earn their credential by completing a number of specific tasks identified by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing. One way to earn a credential is by completing a program at a university or college.
  1. San Diego State University

    • San Diego State University offers a single subject teaching credential and a multiple subject teaching credential. Both programs can be completed on a traditional track or with a specialization in bilingual education (BCLAD). The BCLAD specialization authorizes graduates to teach in elementary school classrooms where subject matter is taught in more than one language, and in classes designed for children who are learning English. The credentials can be completed in two semesters if taken on a full-time basis, or in three to four semesters if taken part-time. The curriculum is divided between student teaching and in-class coursework, which emphasizes meeting the needs of children diverse in culture and linguistic background. San Diego State University also offers special education teaching programs.
