The physician assistant program at Carver College of Medicine at the University of Iowa provides a unique curriculum that is designed to train physician assistant students alongside sophomore medical students. The training runs for 25 months; in their first year of training, students will take courses in patient assessment, ethics, and law and policy related to the medical field. Students will also receive an introductory training in clinical medicine and foundations of clinical practice, which includes practical training in a clinic where students will work with patients in a supervised setting. The final year of training is comprised of clinical practice. Students are also required to take elective courses and select an area of specialization. Course highlights include gross anatomy, biochemistry, pharmacology, and clinical decision-making.

The physician assistant program at Emory University runs for 28 months, and fulfills the requirements for a Master of Medical Science degree for students who successfully complete the training. Graduates from the program are eligible to take the physician assistant national certifying examination. The curriculum places an emphasis on primary health care; students will complete their classroom training on-campus. The clinical portion of the physical assistant training will take place at various medical facilities throughout Atlanta and in different parts of Georgia. Course offerings in physical assisting include foundations of medical science, physiology, pharmacotherapuetics, and behavioral medicine. Core courses in the clinical component of the training are comprised of topics in internal medicine, family practice, gynecology and obstetrics, and pediatrics.

Founded in the 1960’s, the physician assistant program at Duke University provides a solid foundation in basic medical sciences and clinical medicine. Students will also receive a well-rounded training in administrative and research skills. The curriculum is comprised of a 12-month pre-clinical coursework and 12 months of practical training in a clinical setting. The program is only available to full-time students. During their first-year of training, students will receive their training in topics that like physical diagnosis, pharmacology and therapeutics, anatomy and evidence based medicine.
