Master's Programs for a Physician's Assistant

Physician assistants practice medicine, performing procedures as delegated by a physician or surgeon. Physician assistants with master's degrees can develop strong clinical skills and even advance to education or leadership roles in their fields. Employment of physician assistants is expected to increase by 39 percent from 2008 to 2018, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. Median annual wages of these health care professionals in May 2008 were $81,230, reports the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Several schools offer master's programs for a physician assistant.

During the academic phase of the program, students study clinical medicine, basic sciences and behavioral sciences for 42 weeks. They gain experience in various specialties such as pediatrics, surgery, emergency medicine and even psychiatry. In addition, students learn about health care and social services in local areas that receive little medical attention through the program's community service component. Those who complete the two-year program get a master's degree in health sciences, while those who complete the three-year program receive both a health sciences and public health master's degree.
