Complete an approved teacher education program. Choose a desired grade level and specific endorsement area to teach. An acceptable education program includes foundational knowledge in academic subject areas and experience creating and implementing learning experiences. Participate in fieldwork that includes student teaching, educational observations and hands-on experience.
Complete the Oregon basic skills and subject mastery requirements. Pass the CBEST, PPST or Praxis exams. Get the basic skills requirements waived if you have documentation showing that you have completed an accredited doctoral program. Pass the specialty area tests for each endorsement you wish to become certified under. This test is often referred to as the Praxis II.
Pass the Oregon civil rights knowledge requirements. According to Certificationmap.com, the civil rights knowledge requirements can be completed through an Oregon teacher's workshop or a correspondence course. Call the Board of Education in Portland to find specific times and locations for this course requirement.
Complete all application forms. These can be downloaded from TeachOregon.com. Include official transcripts of all college credits earned. Send scores on basic skills tests and specialty mastery exams including the Praxis exam along with the application. Submit one fingerprint card and a $62 processing fee check for a Federal Bureau of Investigation Criminal History Check. This card can be completed at a local law enforcement station. Include a $100 payment for the Oregon initial license evaluation fees.
